Dive Into Poetry

Dates June 24-28

Times 9AM-12PM, Monday - Friday

Location 256 E High St. | Charlottesville, VA 22902

Instructor Mr. Isak Bond, CASJE faculty member

Open To Rising 8th-12th graders

Cost $50 (waived for enrolled students; may be applied to application fee for any students wishing to apply)

Size 6-12 students

Do you love poetry? Or do you feel like you just don't "get" poetry? Either way, this camp is for you. The lucky students who join this camp will get a crash course in reading, writing, and most of all enjoying great poetry. Join Mr. Bond to learn the tools and techniques of the best poets over the ages, from centuries ago to present day, and to keep a poet's notebook where you write imitations and original works of your own. By the end of the week, you will know how to see what great poems are really doing, speak about them with confidence, and make your own poems. The course will conclude with a pool party and an “open mic” opportunity featuring camp members’ own original writing.

Here is what you will need:

1) A notebook dedicated to the week. If you have a nice fancy notebook hanging around with a blank first page because it’s just too nice to spoil, now is your chance to put it to good use. Of course, any composition book will do, but using a quality new notebook is a great way to honor and dignify your activities in this camp, and will also endure as a memento of the camp experience.

2) Writing utensils. For our purposes, pens are better than pencils. No erasers or white-out is allowed, for secret reasons which will be made clear soon enough.

If you have any questions prior to kick-off, we're here to help!

Athletic Program Sneak Peek & Raising Cane's!

Come meet Master Park, who will be offering Taekwondo classes at CASJE in Fall 2024. We're excited to host this Taekwondo demo/workshop for students in grade seven and up to give them a taste for the athletics program at CASJE. After the 30-minute demo class, we'll serve some ever-popular Raising Cane's chicken, and our newly hired teachers will be present to meet the community and tell us why they are excited to join the faculty of CASJE. This is a perfect opportunity to check out Chesterton, and to bring a few friends along!

Families and siblings are welcome to attend; 7th grade and up may participate in the workshop (wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes). Walk-ins are welcome, but it helps if you register for every member of your party that plans to eat.

We look forward to seeing you for some fun, food, and fellowship on May 4th! In the meantime, check out some amazing footage of Master Park in action with a Taekwondo demo team:

Throughout the course of the evening students will also have a chance to have some fun playing games in the youth room at St. Thomas.
